He highlighted that the memorial ceremony of World Meteorological Day has been celebrated annually every year on 23 March all over the world. The theme of this year 2024 is ‘At the frontline of climate action’. He also pointed out that the Meteorological, Hydrological and Climatic Extremes events are becoming more frequent around the world, especially the Island and developing countries, due to climate change. According to the statements of the World Meteorological Organization, 2023 was the warmest year in the 174-year observational record. The past nine years, 2015 - 2023 were the nine warmest years on record. In 2023, global mean sea level reached a record high in the satellite record from 1993 to present, reflecting continued ocean warming as well as melting of glaciers and ice sheets. In addition, the new temperature records has been recorded in 2023 as the year 2023-2024 is a moderate to strong El Niño conditions and it may turn up the heat even further in 2024. As the El Nino events often effects weather and climate processes in all parts of the world, Myanmar also experiences hot and dry summers and water scarcity due to drought and extreme weather and climate such as irregular storm formations, late monsoon onset, and weak monsoon intensity, less of monsoon rain in southwest monsoon season. In order to have a better climate in the future and to mitigate the extreme weather events and disasters, it is needed to speed up the collaborations of government organizations, people and related organizations. In addition, the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology is cooperating and collaborating with World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and partner countries on technical upgrades to issue more accurate meteorological and hydrological forecasts.
